While Professor O'Brien raises valid concerns about the importance of preserving presidential records, her article overlooks critical context and risks presenting a one-sided picture that can mislead readers. The focus exclusively on Trump ignores that recordkeeping inconsistencies have existed across many administrations — Democrat and Republican alike — and that digital media and evolving platforms have reshaped how presidential remarks are delivered and archived.

By framing the shift from transcripts to audio and video as a uniquely “Trumpian” threat, the piece risks sounding more like a partisan critique than an objective analysis. The reality is that preserving presidential records in the digital era is a challenge that goes far beyond any one person. We should be discussing systemic reforms — updating the Presidential Records Act for the digital age, strengthening enforcement, and ensuring access regardless of the medium, rather than implying that one administration alone is responsible for the erosion of historical accountability.

If the goal is truly to safeguard the public record, then the conversation must rise above partisan framing and grapple with the bigger picture. Otherwise, we risk spreading more misunderstanding than illumination.
